US medtech company Mawi announced the launch of the first ever single-use 2-lead cardiac monitor to reach the market.
The Mawi Heart Patch is a stick-and-go wireless device shown to be three times more effective than a Holter monitor at detecting cardiovascular disease.
The patch provides a detailed report within 24 hours, reducing the time to diagnosis by 97 per cent, ensuring patients are given timely access to life-saving treatment.
Andrew Klymenko, co-founder of Mawi, said:
“Cardiovascular diseases pose the greatest risk to our long-term health and are the leading cause of death globally.
“With a lack of or ineffective monitoring often proving critical, many of these deaths can be avoided with the right preventative measures.”
Cardiologists currently rely on Holter monitors to detect arrhythmias.
However, these devices are prone to dislodging, peeling and causing allergic reactions, restricting monitoring times in many cases.
Consequently, more than 50 per cent of arrhythmias go undetected, and many patients wait for up to a month to get results.
Multi-use monitors also require extensive resource investment, with facilities typically only having a few available to patients with the most clear and obvious signs of heart disease.
The Mawi Heart Patch provides an efficient and effective way to detect cardiovascular conditions, enabling healthcare practices to provide timely monitoring to all patients in need.
The lightweight and discreet sensor can be applied in under a minute and patients are able to live as normal while their heart rate is monitored.
The AI scans every heart beat to detect critical abnormalities, eliminating the ‘white coat effect’ – where the presence of the device skews a patient’s vital metrics.
By continuously monitoring for up to seven days, the patch significantly improves the reliability of results, with research showing week-long monitoring is three-times more likely to lead to the detection of abnormalities.
Klymenko said.
“Too often, sufferers do not realise the severity of their symptoms before it’s too late.
“Many patients that use the Mawi Heart Patch look healthy, exercise daily and show no signs of disease, yet have a potentially lethal heart condition.
“In many cases, conditions aren’t caught in time when relying on outdated cardiac monitors and with lengthy delays to diagnosis. Here, the Mawi Heart Patch is a lifesaver.
“We’re on a mission to prevent the heart’s ‘silent killers’, and we’re already working with like-minded clinics that are seeing amazing results.”
